Montreal keyboardist John Roney is one of the most active and visible artists on the Canadian music scene. His "triple threat" versatility as a jazz pianist, classical pianist and multi-genre composer is unrivalled, but it is his virtuosity in each idiom that is truely astonishing.
His musical training includes studies at Cawthra Park School of the Arts, University of Toronto, Berklee College of Music, UCLA (the HMI Institute), The Banff Centre of the Arts, and McGill University, where he is currently on faculty as professor of jazz piano.
As leader of his own projects, John has three albums to his credit, several tours of Canada, the U.S., Europe and Asia, and can often be seen performing live in Montreal, Canada. His string quintet project, Silverbirch, reached critical acclaim in 2008 with their self-titled CD, aimed at fusing classical and jazz idioms. The album was voted into the top 10 CD picks of 2008 (Montreal Gazette) and garnered 2 nominations at l'ADISQ in 2009 (best jazz album, best arranger).
As a sideman, John has participated on more than 50 recordings, is a member of numerous important Canadian groups, and collaborates with local and international musicians to create new projects and opportunities. He has performed/recorded with Donny McCaslin, Jerry Bergonzi, Francois Theberge, Alain Caron, Horacio 'el negro' Hernandez, Johnny Mandel, Phillipe Catherine, but he is best known for his work in Canada with Bernard Primeau, Chet Doxas, the Effendi Jazzlab, Michel Donato, Remi-Jean LeBlanc, and Jean Christophe Beney.
John is also the musical director and principal accompanist to the operatic soprano Natalie Choquette, for whom he has written several shows and produced 2 CDs.
John is an active Korg Canada Artist and clinician. |
